Weekly updates week 13-21

Task - You are all in the process of finalising your Minor Project and Integrated Project (if you are on Route B). Next week will the last week that Staff will help you with your PDF’s before we start the Major Project. This is an exciting time as now the focus is on you completing two live briefs and initiating a Self-Initiated Final Project to end your studies. We hope we can help you find the motivation to use this time to make your best work and leave with a portfolio you can be proud of.

In this Unit building upon your previous experiences, you will consider your position as an illustrator, artist, designer, or other creative practitioner, through a mixture of briefs which are set, live/competition, and self-directed. As well as helping you develop solutions to the various problems within the briefs, you will also be considering the needs of an audience, and how you tailor work to their diverse needs. This final major project unit gives you the opportunity to manoeuvre yourself towards your individual career aims or post graduate study and build a body of work to help you achieve these aspirations. On successful completion of this unit, you will position yourself towards a direction and career you want, and you will build a body of work that reflects your interests, direction, and abilities. You will learn about how to approach clients, foster collaborations, market your work and how to develop your communication and presentation skills. The Major Project Unit is in three parts. All three projects must be completed to meet 100% of the Unit. All projects are in line with the UAL Level 6 Assessment Criteria. The two Live Briefs are shorter, and each require 10 pages of a PDF. The Final Major Project is more rigorous and requires 20 pages of a PDF.

Week 14: Task -Please continue the beginnings of your Live Briefs Phase 1 project. We will expect to see the beginnings of your research next week. Please await instructions from your Tutor. There are some pieces of information below to consider.

Week 15: Tasks - (No class)

Week 16: Tasks - In the next weeks you should be concentrating on the Live Briefs Phase 1 and creating work that we can look at in Week 17, 15th February.

Week 17: Tasks - Next week, Week 17, will be an opportunity to bring your Live Briefs Phase 1 work towards the Realisation phase. The following Week 18, 22nd February, we are to hold a Year 3 Feedback session where we can all look at and discuss the work between the groups. I will send instructions in next week’s briefing about how this will work. Please remember, this is a crucial component of your Communication phase in the assessment.

Week 18: Tasks - Next week we will undertake a Feedback activity day that looks at your Live Briefs Phase 1 work. Please use this opportunity to show work finished or in a work-in-progress phase. Please remember, this is a crucial component of your Communication phase in the assessment and you must contribute work and involve yourself in the session.

Week 19 :Tasks- Next week’s session will focus on the new D&AD Live briefs phase 2 projects. Students will also be reminded to enter their Penguin Book Cover work before the 2pm deadline.

But do you know it inside out?

Can you explain it in one sentence? - Create a movement about kindness.
Have you researched the brand? - Snapchat is a social media site that communicates among friends and families through a 24hr time limit of pictures and videos. Between the ages of 13-24 years old.
Are you clear on what you are being asked to deliver? - Create a movement that expresses and influences kindness that reaches on a global scale.

Challenge the idea

You have your idea locked down.

But is it a winner?

Why will anyone care? - If the idea or pitch can influence or move an audience others will be attracted to what the lens AR filter can do.
Would you do it / engage with it? - To express kindness and share/communicate with others
How does it achieve its goals? - Doing or capturing acts of kindness can help or make someone’s day better.
How does it fit with the brand? - Snapchat is used to share and communicate with others. Their existing filters have been uploaded and shared on other platforms.

Is it original? - The campaign Human(kind) is a spin on mankind but instead includes humans as a whole making a kindness movement that can be easily done by others.

Why does it excite you? - I am familiar with the functions of snapchat and would ike to challenge myself to take on using AR filters.

Week 20/21: Task - Remember to engage in this exercise as it covers the Communication aspect of your assessment. Click the + sign and add your own column. Title the column with your name, group and title of the work. Add completed work or work-in-progress relating to the D&AD briefs. Feedback to three separate people from three separate groups that are not in your group. Feedback on a student who may not have received any feedback and do not hover around the same student’s work if they have already received plenty. Some of you may find safety in numbers and will be tempted to follow a pack. Remember, some students will appreciate or need feedback more than others. For others to get inspired you need to leave encouraging and positive advice, references or ideas to help everybody to move forward. The more rigorous our feedback the better the group dynamic will become.
